Patients who wear braces may face unique dental emergencies. In the event of an orthodontic dental emergency, remain calm and contact our Timonium, MD, orthodontist office as soon as you can. If necessary, our team will make every effort to schedule you for the same day to address your orthodontic emergency.

Common orthodontic emergencies include:

  • Broken wires or brackets: while not an emergency requiring immediate treatment, these should be addressed as soon as possible to avoid prolonging treatment or further damage to your braces.
  • Wires or appliances that are poking the gums or teeth: if a wire or bracket is out of place and protruding, it should be fixed as soon as possible to reduce irritation in the mouth.
  • Pain or discomfort in the mouth: although a check up where braces were tightened may result in mild discomfort, localized or lingering pain should be reported and addressed.

What do I do if my braces break?

Sports-related injuries are the most common cause of broken braces. Children and adult athletes wearing braces are highly encouraged to wear sports mouthguards while playing any sport. If your braces become broken for any reason, contact our Timonium dental office right away.

What do I do if my braces bracket becomes loose?

If one or more of your brackets becomes loose you may require a re-fitting. Dr. Izadi will attempt to see you as soon as possible. If you have a piece of the bracket or wire protruding, our staff may be able to talk you through snipping the wire back for your comfort until you can visit our office.

What do I do if my braces are causing me severe pain?

It is common for patients to experience some level of discomfort during their orthodontic treatment. Ibuprofen or a heating pad can help to alleviate discomfort associated with braces. However, it is not common to have intense or shooting pains. In the event of intense pain, contact our office right away.

What if I get something stuck in my braces?

Popcorn, hard candy, gum, and foods high in starch should be avoided while wearing braces. These foods can easily become lodged in your braces, causing discomfort. If you can not remove a foreign object from your braces with routine oral hygiene or a dental pick, contact our office right away. Never attempt to use a sharp object to remove things from your braces.
