Dr. Izadi has been utilizing self-ligating (SL) braces known as Smart-Clip SL (by 3M Unitek) in both offices since mid 2006. Smart-Clip, Damon, Innovation R, Speed and other self-ligating systems share more or less the same concept. This new technology bracket is specifically designed to reduce friction, and eliminates the need for the alastick ties (also known as the color ties) that are needed with the conventional braces to hold the arch wire in place. Therefore, the treatment time is shortened and the braces stay much cleaner as plaque and food cannot accumulate as heavily as they do with the conventional braces. We are still able to place color ties on some brackets initially if the patient really desires to make the treatment fun, but we gradually discourage the patients from getting the color ties. Cleaner teeth, and shorter treatment time (but yet effective) mean less permanent white scars on the teeth, healthier gums and overall a much better result.
Dr. Izadi has used other brackets and has attended courses in depth to inquire about other systems. He has also discussed extensively with other orthodontists to get their opinions about the systems that they have used or currently using in their practices. We have decided to use Smart-Clip in our practice since the foundation of treatment philosophy, sequencing, and bio-mechanics remains almost the same as with the conventional systems; where the principles and backbone of orthodontic treatment has originated from. Therefore, cases are finished accurately, beautifully and the results are always predictable!
We also use Ceramic (next to invisible) braces for those case that cannot be treated with Invisalign nor wish to be treated with Stainless Steel braces. Adults usually enjoy this kind of braces as they are cosmetically much more appealing. The bracket of choice in our practice is called the Clarity which is also manufactured by 3M Unitek. This is made from a Stainless Steel base, and slot (where the wire is engaged to), surrounded by ceramic for its esthetics. Not only the bracket is reinforced by metal, but also there is less wire friction within the slot when it is compared to ceramics, therefore the treatment time remains the same as with the Stainless Steel braces. We have recently incorporated self -ligating Clarity (SL) in our practices as well for the reasons already mentioned above.
