Orthodontics FAQs

Find answers to your questions about orthodontic treatment at Izadi Orthodontics in Timonium, MD.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the practice of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, maintenance, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. Orthodontics aims to bring alignment and balance to the skeletomuscular system of the face and jaw. Most commonly known for straightening crooked teeth, orthodontic treatment can also correct overbites, underbites, open bites, gaps between teeth, and malformed jaw or bite.

At what age should I bring my child to the orthodontist?

Children who show signs of orthodontic concerns should visit the orthodontist by the age of 7 for an orthodontic exam and facial and bite analysis. This is because by now, their six-year molars and anterior teeth have emerged. Early intervention of developing orthodontic concerns allows for more conservative phased treatment. Many children who participate in Phase I treatment are able to avoid oral surgery and even braces later on in life.

What is the best way to keep braces clean?

Oral hygiene while wearing braces is critical for protecting the health of your teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste, and avoiding sticky, hard, or starchy foods can help keep braces clean.

If you are wearing a retainer, be sure to remove the retainer prior to eating and clean the retainer regularly.

What options are there to straighten my teeth?

Dr. Izadi offers a full range of treatment options for straightening teeth and realigning the bite. We offer personalized treatment plans tailored to the needs and goals of our patients.

Are braces painful?

It is not uncommon to experience some discomfort when patients initially begin treatment with braces. Patients generally get used to the feeling of braces after a few days. Patients may experience gum, cheeks, and other soft tissue irritation, as they adjust to wearing braces.

How long will I have to wear braces?

The exact length of treatment with braces will vary depending on your personal orthodontic needs. Dr. Izadi will help patients estimate the length of treatment during their comprehensive personal exam. Treatment with braces typically takes between six and thirty months but typically falls around twenty-two months.

Do I still need to go to the dentist every 6 months while wearing braces?

Yes. It is even more important to visit the dentist at least every six months while wearing braces. Braces can trap food between your brackets and teeth leading to tooth decay and increases your risk of developing gum disease. Visiting the dentist can help keep your braces clean and your teeth and gums healthy.

Can my child still play sports while wearing braces?

For children who play sports and wear braces, we highly recommend asking your dentist for a custom sports mouthguard. Mouthguards can protect the child’s teeth, gums, and braces from injury during play.
