What to Know About Orthodontics

At Izadi Orthodontics, we offer a wide variety of orthodontic services and treatment options. But what do you need to know about orthodontics and how to take care of them? Dr. Mohammad Izadi, an orthodontist in Cockeysville, MD, explains.cockeysville, maryland orthodontist

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics deals with dental and facial abnormalities. The alignment of the skeletomuscular system of the face and jaw is the ultimate goal. Usually, people think of orthodontics as mainly straightening crooked teeth. That’s not all orthodontics can do, though. It can treat various problems with bites, like open, under, and overbites. They’re also able to take care of gaps between teeth and malformed jaw issues.

When Should Children Go to the Orthodontist?

If you notice children having issues with their bite or teeth, they should be brought to the orthodontist by the age of 7, due to their year 6 molars erupting. Early intervention is crucial to getting the treatment done early, allowing it to be more conservative. Two-phase treatment can possibly help children avoid things like oral surgery and braces as they get older.

Bringing your child to the orthodontist early also helps Dr. Izadi track their progress and development as they age. Their jaw and teeth will keep changing over time. Sometimes, the first phase of two-phase treatment can be all they need. In other instances, Dr. Izadi will notice early on what treatment they’re going to need as they’re growing.

What Orthodontic Treatment Options are Available?

At Izadi Orthodontics, we offer multiple treatment options for various orthodontic problems. First, we offer many types of braces. We offer Invisalign for both adults and teens. These clear aligners are used for mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Invisalign uses clear aligners that can be removed for eating and oral care. You change the aligners every two weeks to slowly shift your teeth into position.

Ceramic braces are an alternative to traditional metal braces. They’re more discreet, low-profile, and smaller. Lingual braces are similar to the traditional form, but they’re placed on the back of the teeth instead of the front. Self-ligating braces trade out the traditional elastic bands of braces for innovative clips to hold the braces in place.

Propel is a convenient tool in our arsenal, particularly for those using Invisalign and other braces options. The technology helps accelerate orthodontic treatment, so you can see your results quicker by accelerating the repositioning of your jaw. Retainers are also used to make sure your smile stays in position after your braces treatment.

There are various orthodontic appliances we offer as well. Herbst appliances are an alternative to headgear, usually used to correct an overbite. Palate expanders are used to widen the upper jaw to make space for teeth in the future. Sagittal appliances work similarly, but for the lower jaw.

We also offer laser dentistry, tooth whitening services, and tooth extractions, if you have non-orthodontic needs!
