Self-Ligating Braces Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What are self-ligating braces?

Answer: Self-ligating braces may not be a common one that you’ve heard of. At Izadi Orthodontics, we offer 3M™ Clarity™ self-ligating braces to help fix crooked teeth, malocclusion, and other orthodontic issues.

Self-ligating braces don’t use the traditional elastic bands that you may think of. With their unique clip design, the braces are held in place without them. The brackets can be adjusted automatically, without the annoyance of messing with the bands.

Question: What are the benefits of using this method of braces?

Answer: Aside from eliminating the bands and producing less waste, you have to go to fewer appointments. Since they can be automatically adjusted, appointments aren’t needed as often. The lack of ligatures and their open design is also optimal for hygiene. For younger patients that need braces, they may fare better with brushing and flossing with this type.

Self-ligating braces use durable ceramic brackets that are colored to match your teeth. This makes them less noticeable on your smile, especially without the bands and ligatures. The brackets are designed to be smooth as well, making them more comfortable than metal. Metal brackets often cause irritation or sores in the soft tissues of the mouth. The shaping of the brackets used for Clarity braces seek to eliminate that irritation.

Lastly, you may actually have a shorter treatment time with self-ligating braces. They use the latest technology and are designed to move your teeth quickly and efficiently. This may lead to overall shorter treatment time, complete with fewer office visits.

Question: Is there extra maintenance for self-ligating braces?

Answer: As with traditional braces, oral hygiene is important when you have self-ligating braces. It’s essential to make sure you brush regularly, ideally after every meal. Make sure that you’re brushing thoroughly around the brackets especially. This will prevent staining from being left when they’re removed, as well as tooth decay around them.

They are a bit less maintenance than traditional braces. With elastic bands, food particles are more likely to get stuck under and around them. Depending on the colors, the bands can also stain, making them look unsightly on your teeth.

Question: Am I an ideal candidate for self-ligating braces?

Answer: Dr. Izadi will help determine which braces option is optimal for you. If you’re a candidate for traditional or ceramic braces, you’ll most likely have the option for self-ligating too. Dr. Izadi will fully evaluate your oral health and orthodontic needs and determine what will be the most beneficial option to meet your goals.
